News: Dozens of accidents reported, at least 1 fatal, on icy roads in North Texas

A man was killed in a rollover crash on Interstate 20 near the Green Oaks Boulevard entrance ramp in Arlington.

ARLINGTON, TX - Police in North Texas responded to dozens of car accidents Monday and Tuesday as freezing rain and sleet caused slick conditions on the area roadways, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

At least one of the crashes, in Arlington, was fatal.  It happened Monday night in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 20 near the entrance ramp for Green Oaks Boulevard at about 8:44 p.m.  Witnesses said the driver of a Toyota 4Runner apparently lost control of the SUV, slid into a guardrail and went down an embankment.  Police said the driver was ejected from the vehicle and died after being taken to an area hospital.  The victim, a 45-year-old man, was not believed to have been wearing a seat belt.  Police said he was going too fast for the icy road conditions.

A total of 142 motor vehicle accidents were reported Monday across North Texas with another 19 reported by 5 a.m. Tuesday, the report said.  A number of drivers were stranded in Fort Worth.  Drivers were being advised to stay off the roads or drive slowly with conditions expected to worsen through the day Tuesday and Wednesday.
